Bingo.....you got it....at least there is a work around for that problem..shimming the rockers.
The engines I really hate are the ones butchered by dimwit mechanics..
The guys that use angle grinders to clean the block...dishing the aluminum so bad that the headgaskets never seal...and of course...the guys that think that just because their impact gun has a torque rating...it can be used as. TorqueWrench...stripping or weakening the threads.
Nothing worse than going for the final torque on the head...and feeling the bolt go soft...

Point taken....its always faster and easier to be hands on...
Ill talk to the guy that writes these questions....

If you did play chess...3 level chess has the same pieces distributed on 3 different boards...one board atop the other..now remove all the pieces and play the game commiting each piece and each move to memory...keeping track of everything without seeing anything...fun game...

Here is a failure that gave us fits.
Small B&S vertical "Quattro" would continue to run when handle bail released. Ground wire from coil good and flywheel brake working properly. Oh yea, would continue to run when plug wire removed too.

You have a Quattro that stays running when you remove the sparkplug wire..???
Does NASA know about this ???
You realize that you have surpassed the capabilities of an inductive spark 4 stroke engine,,
It aint no diesel with a Quattro sticker on it ..is it.???

The engine was laboring but kept chugging along. Pulled the head and found a ridge in the combustion chamber, my guess is a crack in the die at the foundry. One, or some, of the peaks was making a hot spot that ignited the gas. Massaged the head with a D/A to make everything smooth and reassembled. The problem went away.

The ole dieseling 4 cycle trick....Got to get them pretty hot to make them run on their own...
I heard once...though I never tried it..If you spray a mist of water into the carb while the engine is at WOT...it will loosen up those deposits and blow them out the muffler..???

During a short stint at a rental place..
We had a new diesel engine that smoked...it was determined that the rings were not seated yet...
They needed the piece of equipment to fill an order....ASAP...
The shop forman came back from lunch with a new can of Ajax cleaner...
He poured it in the air intake while it was running...it stopped smoking..
We changed the oil and shipped it...
I didnt hang around there long enough to see what else he damaged..it was still running when I left...

I got this from the History Channel. Back in the day, the engines on the B29s would smoke, brand new engines right off the assembly floor. The mechanics in the field would use Bonamie (sp) A powdered cleaner the same way. But I agree with you, don't try this at home

Question #17...5 hp Briggs sideshaft...

Condition...Engine backfired when pulling the rope...broke the rope..
Fixed the recoil...tried to start the engine again..the engine kicked back and tried to lengthen my arm...

Defective compression release or improperly adjusted valves?
