My problem with back firing was not letting the engine idle down before shutting off.
The problem with the hard "first" start still persist. I found this, the link below that may be helpful.http://www.kohlerengines.com/onlinec..._32_690_01.pdf I will be pulling the battery and starter as soon as the weather permits and take both to the parts store and have them checked. A List of things that could be the problem.
Engine Cranks But Will Not Start ● Battery connected backwards. ● Blown fuse. ● Carburetor solenoid malfunction. ● Choke not closing. ● Clogged fuel line or fuel filter. ● Diode in wiring harness failed in open circuit mode. ● DSAI or DSAM malfunction. ● Empty fuel tank. ● Faulty electronic control unit. ● Faulty ignition coil(s). ● Faulty spark plug(s). ● Fuel pump malfunction-vacuum hose clogged or leaking. ● Fuel shut-off valve closed. ● Ignition module(s) faulty or improperly gapped. ● Insufficient voltage to electronic control unit. ● Interlock switch is engaged or faulty. ● Key switch or kill switch in OFF position. ● Low oil level. ● Quality of fuel (dirt, water, stale, mixture). ● SMART-SPARKTM malfunction. ● Spark plug lead(s) disconnected. The back firing problem has been solved. |

Finally an update on my starting problem. 1) I found the choke leaver that was made of plastic had melted. I couldn't find a choke kit to to repair it with so I bought a new carb. 2) I replaced the starter and that solved my problems. I found tewarehouse.com had very good prices on the items I needed.
