Help choosing a used 36 walk behind mower.

Looking to buy a used 36 walk behind on Craigslist in the next few weeks or so. Budget is up to $2500-$3000 or so. Any suggestions on what I should and should not buy?
Thanks!

Every mower I own came from Craigslist.

I am not a Scag fan by no means, but I do have a 36" belt drive Scag that I bought for $500 six years ago. One thing I would suggest is to determine how much you are going to use the mower. My walkbehind only gets used bought 90 minutes a week. I have three other mowers. I couldn't justify that much money for something that is used very little. I would get a pull start if I wasn't using it much and definitely a Kawasaki motor and not a Kohler.

Don't buy any Snapper belt driven machines. Those had slipping problems, however their hydro units seems rock solid. Buy almost any model of Scag but the freedom models. They have yet to prove themself as a reliable belt drive with a belt 50% smaller than their big brothers.
