Terrastar, f-550, dodge, 5500

Anybody have input on the new terrastar, f-550, or the dodge 5500. I feel like new diesel trucks are over priced and a gamble with all the problems they have. Are we better off looking for older proven models?

The terra star runs the 6.4 I believe. That alone would make me run. The new 6.7 Ford has so far proven to be a good engine. The Dodge will have some nice new features when the new ones come out.

That's what I heard, but I also heard that they are fine. I do know that the new ford 6.7 is a nightmare to work with under the hood. And dodge is just dodge, I'm not sold on them. Do you know any thing about the payload?

Dodge 5500 gets my vote. Only one with a proven powertrain. I also like the GM 45/5500's, but they are hard to come by in good shape and are expensive.

Nope don't own one, but it's pretty common knowledge that the Cummins motor is a good one. I prefer the Duramax/Allison, but GM doesn't play in the medium duty game anymore (may change in the future though). Kelly's Landscaping has two new Dodge's (one a 4500, the other a 5500) and I'm sure he'll chime in here soon.

The new terrastars gave a maxxforce 7. We see them very rarely at the IHC dealer I work at. They do however have a light steer axle. If you are thinking about plowing I would step up to a duastar with a maxxforce DT. The high cost on new diesels is all in the emissions.

I'm looking for a truck that can take close to 5 tons daily and tow a trailer also

Then buy a heavier truck than a 450,550,4500,5500. It will cost less in the long run. Tons of options out there, 4300 with a DT 466 will easily 2x outlast any of the above trucks, Do you have a CDL ?

No cdl, not worried if I had to get one. I don't put tons of miles on my truck now, around 10,000 a year. I don't know if I need a truck that is built to go for 300,000 miles, and the next step up is a lot more truck and I like having a lighter footprint, and a class 5 truck isn't as juicy of a target for the DOT pricks. I have a f-550 now and it can work. It can take 5 tons of stone no problem, 15 yards of chips and the chipper, ext. I'm
focused on the 19500 range and I have no clue which truck will take the abuse for 10 years before it is sold or traded in. Every new truck is junk with all the emission ****. Thanks for the input.
