Buying used equipment

Hi all I'm looking to start a new business this year and have been looking for equipment. I came across a guy a while back that had his whole set-up for sale. Blowers, trimmers, mowers, trailer etc. After a little haggling he made an offer that I might accept.
My big question is how can find out if the mowers he has are not stolen, or involved with any other legal action like a lien. Is there a way to search the serial numbers?
I don't really suspect they are, but don't want to find out after I hand him a large chunk of cash.

Thats a good question. Just cover yourself. Get the guys name and address, but get it from his ID. This way you know who to go back to if there is ever an issue.

My opinion ID him get a bill of sale, If it,s not titled like a truck or trailer then it can't have a lien there are secured liens and unsecured liens.
