i finally got it

hey guys, as many of you know i have been wanting to get a truck for the past year or so. well this week i have been looking at ford f-150 1985, long bed, ladder rack, newer paint job, tow ball, manual tranny, 4.3 liter straight 6, rebuilt engine, body in near perfect condition and the interior is even better. last night i put a deposit it on it and will be bringing it home tonight hopefully, i am only paying $500 for it. runs good, may need minor mechanical work but for that price i am not complaining at all.

Hey STS- $500 doesn't sound like much, are you sure it's only minor work it needs? Good luck either way, sounds like a great start. Mike

I had an 84,dad had 85 when I was in high school. Both were 4.9 ( 300cid)4spd,4th being overdrive. Both got good gas mileage but were geared way to high for pullin. The 300 is a good engine, the 1bbl carbs act up,exhaust manifolds crack but very reliable trucks, worth 500.00!!

I use to have the same year Ford, small v8 automatic tranny...wouldn't pull worth didly...everytime we hooked up a trailer, it blow out the tranny...I know of MANY other guys who had the same problem with the f150's during those years as well...eventually, just used it as a service truck...if it's a manual shift, it should be o.k., haven't had any problems with those, but the automatic tranny's we're crap...

ok guys sorry for the delay on an update...... i did bring it home (middle of snow storm) it started right up has a newer if not new clutch and the same on the brakes. also has a new front end. engine sounded good and it drove fine, only thing we noticed was black smoke out the exhaust but we are guessing thats from it sitting for a year. this weekend we are cleaning it up putting a new bbattery in and making a list of parts we need to give it a good tuneup. next weekend will be the tune up, soon after new tires then after that get it inspected and tagged.

Hmmmm. Are you sure it only has minor mechanical defects? I not so sure.
Be sure to have a really competant mechanic look at it.

update here guys. gave the truck a tuneup sunday and it went well, those big old trucks are easy to work on. changed the spark plugs, oil, oil filter, air filter. a few more things to do next weekend. only problem i have found is it smokes. my guess is after the new oil gets through it and run it for a while it will be ok. it did sit for about a year. more to come.
