Seed over snow
Can seed be sown over deep snow?
Sure it can...but will it germinate and grow? I will let you know in about 8 weeks. I seeded a one sq yard area on a weedy and thin vacant lot over about 8 inches of snow. I used 3 ounces which is about 21 pounds per thousand sqft. I also seeded similar areas nearby, as I planned to seed in each month of fall winter and spring. Used perennial ryegrass. Feb 11th, 2013. Temp today about 33. I also seeded plastic cups in my garden with a pinch of seed--after removing enough snow to find the cup. The cups are filled with potting soil, drilled for drainage and plunged into the garden soil. Its difficult to tell from the photo; the gloves indicate the corners of the seeded area. Area is marked under the snow with plastic markers pushed into the partially frozen soil at the corners. The second photo gets a little closer. Upper portion of the photo near the road, has a little extra snow thrown up by the snowplow. There was no soil preparation...nor irrigation. |

Keep an eye on where the seeds float off to as it melts... if that square doesn't fill in with new seed come Spring,,, it may be because the seed didn't reach the ground... it will definately be interesting to see how it goes... I always try to seed during a snow storm...

We got about a half-inch of snow the next day. Now its raining, but we expect rain to turn into snow in a few hours. The snow is still 6 inches deep. Temp 37 on Feb 14. I don't think the seed will move much--time will tell.
