Can anyone identify this shrub and what it needs?

A client wants this shrub taken care of. About half of it is dead I believe it is a forysithia, is this right? More importantly, she told me "it needs something, just make it look nice, even if you have to take it out" If someone said this, would you guys just trim the dead stuff then prune it slightly, or do a complete removal? sorry the pic isnt great

Also, as I look at it more closely, it seems the ivy could be choking it. Could this be a reason some of it is dying?

Need to get the ivy out. You can then possibly recover the bush

i cant tell what it is from that far away, can you get a closer look at the foliage? forsythia has darker leaves.

i dont think the ivy is doing anything to it, but i am going to say it might be getting too much shade and is trying to reach for the sunlight.

without proper ID, we cant say what the best pruning option would be

The ivy is definitely causing a lot of the problem. Ivy will kiil a tree...imagine what it will do to a shrub. Personally, I'd take out the shrub and let the ivy run its course. If you don't, you'll always be fighting a losing battle.

No one can tell you what it is from that pic.

Agreed with the ivy.
