Buying trees in january?

Hi all. I have a place near me that is going out of business. I have a chance to pickup a load of Hemlocks, Evergreens etc really cheap. Would anyone even think about this? I am thinking they are dorment (of course) and if I heel them in now whats the differance if its at a nursery or in my yard? If I can get them for less than 1/2 price is it worth the shot?
Thanks!!
Mike..... (oh I am in CT).

See if you can store them in a local green house till it gets warmer. Atleast to protect it from the harsh weather. I bet you could even talk them down to 75% off. But only buy stuff you know you will use.

If they are outside now, leave them outside. Maybe put wood chip around the root balls (as is normal in the nursury). If you put them inside a green house you might mess with there dormancy. That not good for a tree. If you can get them right into the ground where you want to plant them, even better. You might also want to think about protecting them from the wind with a mesh tarp or such between posts, no over them.
I would watch buying the hemlock. You are in a region that has a problem with Hemlock Wolly Adelgid. If you plan on planting them, you must also plan on spraying them yearly if you want them to live. Also Hemlock Elongate scale? is another problem we have here.
