Bobcat Gear Drive Walk Behind

I have a bobcat gear drive walk behind 36" commercial mower with a 14.5 I/c Briggs and Stratton motor. When I try to pull it there's a lot of compression. When I take spark plug out it pulls fine no noises just turns over. When I put spark plug back in compression is very tight again and I cannot get it started. What can I do????

I don't know how to check the valve clearance. This mower was given to my by my FIL. I've never had one before and don't know how to work on them. Thanks for the info, would you be able to tell me how to check the valve clearance?
