It's Spring time folks, let's check out those trailers

It's Spring time again folks. Before embarking on another year it's time to go over our trailers, do an inspection and fix all of those things that got worn out and broken last year.

On my list of things to be done this year is to replace my trailer coupler and ball. Over time these do wear and replacing them is far cheaper than having a trailer get loose and cause an accident. Mine have gotten sloppy over the years and I can hear a slight bang each time I take off or slow down. My coupler is an Atwood and it's non adjustable so replacement is the only option. My trailer ball was used when I got it and that was 8 years ago. With welding included the cost should be $150 at the most so I feel as though it is money well spent.

Also make sure your emergency battery is in good shape and holds a charge. Yank the pin out of the disconnect and make sure the brakes come on.

What are some other things we should be checking/adjusting to get our trailers ready for the new year?

I just repacked the bearings and rotated the tires (Thanks Patriot). Also check and make sure all lights function properly.

I need to re-weld the expanded mesh on the ramp in a couple of spots as well.

Well, I found out today what the banging was all about. The drawbar/ball mount has a pin that passes through it to keep it in the hitch. The holes in the drawbar for the pin were getting egged out. This drawbar has too many years on it and is ready for replacement.

Mine does the same thing. Have you checked the receiver? Mine is egged out as well as the drawbar. I installed a grade 8 bolt and locked it down. Some better but not completely.

The hitch is brand new. If it's egged out already Reese owes me some money.

Check all lights and signals. Make sure pulleys and cables on drop down ramps are working right - lube them.

Check those leaf springs with a fine toothed comb for fatigue cracks. Also inspect and put a wrench to the u-bolts. Many trailers ride right down on top of the u-bolts and will wear them through. Most of the single axle rigs I see going down the road are overloaded or maxed out.
