Oh No...

I lost all my fish this past winter and don't know why.

I did everything the same as last year, but this winter was extremely brutal...more -20 days and 3x the normal snow.

I think what happened was I left the screens on I use to keep leaves out of the pond and some leaves accumulated over the heater which blocked the opening.

I guess it's start over time

Considering how unusually harsh your Winter was, what do you guess was the total thickness of the ice? Did the pond perhaps freeze completely. How thick was the snow cover? Did the snow completely cover the heated area?
Lots of fish are lost every Winter in Northern Latitude garden ponds. Sad.

I don't think the ice was much more than 10-12 inches thick. I had placed a 2' x 8' piece of plywood over the heater to help keep the snow off and deflect the wind, but I'm 100% sure it was the leaves that accumulated over the heater that did it.

The kind of, good news, my wife saw one fish still swimming about, so all is not lost.
