is this mower underpowered?

2008 Ferris IS1500Z Kav19 19 HP Kawa

I have the Scagg 48" zero turn SSZ 18HP Kohler Magnum
It is underpowered.

What do you think of the Ferris?

I had an 18 HP Kawa pull start on my Ransomes 48" Run-(don't walk)-yer-ass-off behind mower. That was not under powered, but you didn't sit on it and it weighed less.

I would not buy it for that reason.

Yah, I think I agree.
"But mommy, mommy it's only Three Gees"
'Cept I just got back from my dealer and he'll sell me the 26 HP model brand spanky new for $6300, And that's without me negotiating. Usually he's pretty good about the negotiation. So If I throw cash on the table ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ And it's got a three year warranty and this dealer is 100% reliable.

He'll sell me a new IS2000Z 61" commercial for $8200, but I don't really want to spend 8-Gees.

I dunno' I went to look at the little 18HP ferris. It's a 2008 and sold by the same dealer who has it now. (this is a different dealer than the one I mentioned above). It looks nice, even the rub pads on the front axle are not wearing paint away. But it's still 18HP. I bet the reason he's got it back is the old owner wanted more OOOMPH and bought a Ten thousand dollar Kubota. They are not a Ferris dealer any more. Kubota and ford is what they sell.

The $6300 IS 1500 has a 48"

The IS2000z a 61"

I'm about this " close to getting the IS1500.
Maybe I'll make up my mind this coming week. Good time to put my Scagg up for sale as it's the beginning of the season.

There is a lot to consider when buying a Z mower. The bigger the wheel motors are for speed, the bigger the engin needs to be. If you are mowing any steep grades, Z's that are fast do not have enough torque for the grades. I learned the hard way. My first Z mower was a 60" Hustler with a 23HP engin. I burnt the engin up in one month by useing it on steep areas. Hustler was nice enough to take it back and "up" grade me to a Super Z with a 25HP engin. That was worse than the first mower because it had bigger wheel motors for speed. I would say you need at least a 23HP engin on a 48" deck for flat ground and higher HP for steep areas. A 60" deck needs at least 27HP for reasenable power. Look at what you mow and buy the biggest engin you can afford.

I don't have meaningful hills or slopes on my property. There is a sort of a steep incline where my driveway lies adjacent to the back yard but the stretch is like 8 or 10 feet. Mostly it's a handful of acres of weeds and grass.

I think I've sold myself on the Ferris.
