Most common cause for battery not charging?

Hi folks,

Thought I would post here as I don't do a whole lot of commercial mowing these days. Anyhow I have a 2005 Cub Cadet RZT with 850 hours on it. This spring the battery will not charge during operation. I replaced the battery with the same results. The strange thing is that when I shut off the mower or even overnight the volts show 12.4 or more. As soon as I start mowing it slowly drops to around 10 volts and the PTO will not engage. As long as I don't reverse or make sharp turns the PTO does not shut off as usual and I can keep mowing. Do you think it is the alternator under the flywheel or something else? I am not all that familiar with testing the leads with a voltmeter to see where the problem is but I may borrow one based on what the problem may be. Thanks for any help!

Sound like you lost a cell. Time for a new one.
