questions about seeding

hey guys, can anyone recommend a type/brand of grass seed that is better for a thin topsoil layer? im in the mtns in nwnj and all the properties around me have the same problem. 1 to 3 in of topsoil over rock/gravel/stone. its 2 acres of some shade, and some sun. I will dethatch with a frt mount jrco unit on my bobcat to remove thatch and loosen soil. I think aerating would be pointless. currently its about 40% grass and 60% thatch. ill post pics later. thanks

With thin topsoil and low organic matter both water holding and nutrient holding are limted. I would guess that any low input grass would be better, something that doesn't require as much water and nitrogen. So it it were me KBG would be out an TTTF or even a low input fine fescue would be a better choice.

But obviously getting compost or other sources of organic matter would improve whatever you plant and should be a priority.

I have one lawn that has less than a 1/2 inch of topsoil over a hill of 'blow sand', and w/out irrigation... not only that but I also have heavy tree competition and shade,,, yet am able to keep a solid stand of healthy turf...

I will say that the LAST thing you want to do is,,, remove OM from your lawn... Work on returning your "thatch" back to the soil...

What is your definition of "thatch"?? and How did it become an issue???

Now that I know that clay's texture(platelets) has nothing to do with water infiltration, percolation, or drainage
,,, I wonder what does...
