Most small Kohlers come factory spec'd at 3750 no load. You never really want to be mowing grass under 3600 rpm for dry turf.
I've had tachs on every mower since my 1997 DC Flatlander.

Call me crazy but after 1600 trouble free hours at that rpm I'd say keep using whatever oil you're using and leave it alone. Also stick with Kohler because they seem to like you!

Well this mower is the reason I thought the 460 was running to low on the rpm's because it feels like the engine is running much faster. I will check the 460 today or tomorrow sometime. I have a feeling the tach is correct. Im not sure if I did something when I replaced a head gasket to change the rpm. It is possible. I am going to slow it down to 3750 and call it good. At 3750 it should be around 3700 with the blades on and in the 3600's while cutting through grass.

I may have only been this way for the last 150 hours or so since I replaced the head gasket.

Update on the 460 rpm's. I finally put the tach on it today and it is telling me it is running at 1760rpm. I tried it a few times and same thing every time at full throttle. Took it off and put it on the little 15 kaw powered 34Z and it is running at 3200 rpm which I believe. Apparently the ignition system on the EFI kohlers is different and the sen dec tach will not read it correctly. That sucks!

That's strange, especially since there still has to be an electronic impulse that passes through the plug wire to the plug.
Maybe a dumb question(s), but are you sure you have the correct wire on the plug wire, and/or that the ground is really grounded? The first time I tried mine, I got that same reading, but after making sure the lead to the plug was wrapped at least 4 complete circles, and that the ground was good, it started reading correctly, and has ever since.

If you have the tach with a selector set it to 720, if not just double what you read, anyway your engine is running 3520 rpms. The pulse rate is different on your new engine than on the old one.

Actually, you have 4 settings on the tach. You may have accidentally bumped/changed the S1 switch setting while moving the tach from one machine to the other. It should be on 02. If you still have your instruction sheet, it's all on there, if not, let me know and I'll get you the info on changing it correctly.

I believe that you're right about the reading being half of what it is actually turning up, butI 'm not sure I follow you here in bold. There's still only one spark pulse per cycle going to each wire on his engine I believe.

Mine didnt come with an instruction sheet. The basic instructions was on the back of the package and it had a large sticker over it. I tried to remove the sticker but it pulled up and messed up the instructions that was on the package. If it is really 3520 I want to turn it up to 3750 so I would bring it up to 1875 then. That should help it pick up a little more power and a little ground speed and blade speed.


I checked the oil today. The 30wt now has 80 hours on it and it has not consumed any oil at all. It is still right on the full mark.
