Fastrak Superduty 36" Engine Problems

We have two Fastrak Superduty 36" mowers both have the Kaw 17 hp Kai engines. The first one has blue smoke coming out of the muffler. The second one I guess you would call it engine surging it idles high and then low up and down. What is the problem with both can a person fix these or should they go to a dealer?

Blue smoke? I look for oil consumption, maybe over filled? the up and down idle is signs of a lean mixture. possible dirt in the carb. a shadetree mechanic like me would start with some sea foam in that engines fuel system hoping to clean it up a bit..
