Deisel swap will run an arm and a leg. Dual exhaust or K&N filter won't give you the noticable power your looking for while towing, didn't for me. Check if they have a computer upgrade or a aftermarket chip for that year of truck.

As I mentioned, my trailer is only a 6x8 enclosed (one scag 32wb, and a couple hundred pounds of the rest of the normal stuff. I'm just a 1-2 man crew NOT looking to expand). I'm won't be pulling anything larger for now. It's not that heavy of a load... it just tends to bog on long steep grades.

Plus.... I really am on a budget for this, so most likely suggestions like "buy a different truck" or even extensive mods are probably not going to happen real soon. I am thinking more along the lines of the K&N and muffler, and maybe a 4bbl and manifold from the junk yard!

Don't get me wrong - I do appreciate the help. LOTS of great suggestions.

I had a 98 Ram with the 318. First off are you towing with the O/D off? I dunno if your year even had O/D but mine had no torque while in O/D. I put a K&N in and could notice a very slight difference. I pulled a 16ft open which totally loaded sometimes exceeded 5,000 lbs. It struggled but I was always able to eventually get up to speed without much of a problem.

I think the best thing about the K&N is that if you keep the truck for 150,000 miles you will save money as opposed to buying paper filters. Plus I think it does a better job of cleaning the air.

One thing no one has mentioned, that I'd certainly check into is a Jacobs Electronic Ignition set up. Cost is around $500 - $600, not cheap, but cheaper than getting another truck. And I've heard it makes a big difference in horsepower, and in mileage. If you're around a radio on Saturday or Sunday afternoons, tune it to AM 550, and listen to the car talk show (I'm drawing a blank on his name right now). He's pretty high on these kits. Otherwise, I vote for trading for a Cummins.

A1, no muffler=pretty loud, not exactly legal, will pass emissions but not the visual inspection of the exhaust. My solution-do emissions seperately (they won't put the truck in the air) And have a regular mechanic (good friend preferably) do the safety inspection.

-Horsejockey---5 hp on top of a stock 145 or so is not bad for $10 or less and an hour of your time plus reduced air restrictions lets the increased airflow through easily from a K&N filter making the filter produce more power. Add to that a 4barrel carb and torquer intake manifold (do you notice the air flow theme) and the two inexpensive mods make the real mods-carb and manifold more productive. If you have some good advice to give please share it. It is possible that you know alot more on this subject than the rest of us but you have yet to prove it. Please give good advice or none and I will try to do the same.

-jsr2741 makes a good point-you can get underdrive pulleys for around $80 that are good for a couple horses. As far as ditching the cat, I agree it will help on power but my '87 failed emissions miserably when I tested with no cat. Pa emissions are pretty strict though-maybe you can get by with it in Texas.

Who in the heck would take a chance of putting a cummins in a 1/2 ton? You know how much torgue there is on the frame of a dodge 3/4 or 1 ton with a cummins in it? it would twist that frame in the 1/2 ton quickly. Not to mention you would need a whole new drivetrain and fuel system along with all the firewall and dash accessories. No way. dump it and buy somehting 3/4 or higher no less.

get an older 318 76 or 77 (more horsepower cheap) with under a 100,00 mi. put a fresh carb on it new timing chain and gear drop it in get rid of any cat. converter **** run dual pipes all the way out the back
if you decide the 360 route make sure to change torq converters
