Like Marek stated you may want to consider a medium or heavy duty truck. I don't think any 5500 dodge or ford could haul 5 tons in the bed like you want to do, legally anyway.

Ha, I stay away from the weigh stations, not worried about being over weight occasionally. I want some confidence in buying a new class 5 truck. Maybe I should go bigger, but then I should do a hook lift at that point. Then the price tag gets large.

The DT466 is gone. A Maxxforce 7 is a v engine. I would look at the durastar class with a Maxxforce DT or a maxxforce 9. Both of those are pretty durable engines and that class truck would handle all your needs.

If you decide to go with a class 6 or larger truck (26,000+ GVWR) I'd look at a Pete 325/330/337 or a KW T270/T370 over a DuraStar.

My f-550 has a 7.3. Aside for minor repairs, it starts right up and is worked hard almost everyday, not abused but def. pushed to its limits. Im wondering if any of the new trucks will have the same reliability and be able to take the load day in and day out as well as my f-550 does. I haven't checked out any new trucks but i'm skeptical of ford, dodge may have a good engine but I hear the rest of the truck will fall apart. Im leaning towards the terrastar. It doesnt need any DEF, has an allison and the pop hood is a big deal, and it comes in 4x4. But I dont know for sure.

I don't think International has released the 4x4 TerraStar, or if they have I ain't seen one. I was looking at class 5 C&C trucks a few months ago and the TerraStar does seem to be cheaper than a Ford/RAM, the build quality on the TerraStar didn't impress me though. As far as Dodge trucks falling apart, the older ones sure did, but since Fiat took Chrysler over their build quality has really improved. If I was buying a new class 5 truck today it would be a Dodge, or I'd find a low mile gently used Chevy 5500 Kodiak with the Duramax.

Ill find out tomorrow about a 4x4 terrastar. Only issues I've seen with them is one with an injector stuck open and wouldn't build fuel pressure and one with the high pressure fuel pump leaking internally into the engine. Oil was getting fuel in it. Few little things here and there but otherwise not to bad. Like I said before very light axle. If you plow you would need something bigger.
