Freebie Tip Of The Week From INTEGRA

Are you using the Intermatic DT620 Digital Astro timers and sick and tired of replacing batteries in them? Well that is because they ship with LR44 batteries that are an el-cheapo, standard alkaline battery that drops voltage in constant low draw applications. They also have a very low tolerance for freezing.

Instead you can upgrade to an SR44 battery. This is a Silver Oxide version, same voltage, same size, but lasts much longer. Hunt around online for the best prices.

Light On...

Thanks for the tip- I have been buying replacement batteries in the fishing aisle of walmart of all places. Turns out that same battery is used for night glowing fishing floats--Who knew. (2 for $1.59, el-cheapo for sure)

Good tip on the higher quality ones though- I'll have to look around.

You can find the SR44's from energizer for about $1.10 apiece on eBay. LR44's can get down to under $.05 each if you go bulk and generic. A big difference. Which one do you think last longer though? Beware of those bulk cheapies. They can go about 5% failure rate or more right out of the box.

I just got off the phone with an 'old friend' from here on Lawnsite. He says that recently he has had nothing but issues with the Intermatic DT620 Timers. Previously, he has hundreds installed with no problems but lately they have been failing like crazy, to the point he has no more faith in the product. I am wondering about your experiences:

(I just received my first order of these and was planning to start using them in my 'value' systems)

I have probably somewhere in the ballpark of 80 of these installed ranging from 2.5 years old to present. I have only had one true failure so far and I am partly to blame for that (dropped it about 7 feet onto concrete). I will say that in some locations they have a tendency to lose or gain about 15-20 minutes per year on the clock. As for overall performance, it's really hard to knock them for the price. They do what they say they will do and save a lot of service calls for adjustment and power outages.

I warranty them all for a period of 1 year and that's it. Intermatic has been pretty specific in recent packaging to include in large font "INDOOR" timer on these. Yes, they are housed in the transformer and could theoretically be considered indoors, but I still don't really believe that is a fair assessment. I would be hesitant in Canada where winter temps are 35-40 degrees below zero for extended periods of time in winter. I tell most customers who buy these not to expect much more than 2-3 years out of them. The amount of service visits these things save vs. analog timers over the course of 2-3 years causes these timers to pay for themselves 3-4 times over.

Lastly, Intermatic does have the true outdoor digital astro (which you probably know, but others might not). It doesn't mount inside the trans, but actually side mounts next to it with a double receptacle. I actually like these even less for multiple reasons, but my biggest beef is the fact that both of the outlet receptacles are open air and not covered. How can it be rated for outdoor if the outlets are not protected from the elements.

I've used them for close to 3 years now. I have yet to have any real problems with them. Recently I ordered a batch of 6 that were all bad right out of the box (some error code) but they were taken care of immediately. All in all they are a pretty reliable timer.
