I had one of "those" guys that seemed to be the"leader" of my laborers tell me that him and one of the others wanted more money to work faster. After I let him and the other go the others seemed to pick up the pace a bit!

Tell him to go and start his own business then he can make that. I would let him go elsewhere if he wants, but be extremely careful what you say when he goes... he will come back. Workers without a license are only worth about a third of everyone else in reality. Put out an ad in the local paper.

Real simple:
No employee is that valuable that you keep them or else......life goes on.

I let 2 employees go for this reason, and both of them regretted it. If you treat them fair.....there's a reason the saying goes the grass isn't always greener on the other side.


By the way, both of those former employees are now there own bosses and employ people. We still both respect each other and on good terms. We buy lunch for each other on rainy days or will shoot the bull with each other at the dumps, 7-eleven ect....

Can't make the money working for somebody else, you have to work for yourself....however there is a price to pay.

If this guy produces $2,100 wk billable hrs, costs you $700 he made you $1,400.

If a replacement guy A prod. $1,800 B. hrs, costs you $400 he made you $1,400.

Now replacement guy B prod. $1,200 B. hrs, costs you $350 he made you $850.

You are in a hard position. Your best man is flipping out. He knows you need him and thats why he is doing that. This happended to me.

Call his bluff. Keep all your personal information away from him. Don't allow him access to how much you charge your clients.

Little tips.
1. never hire friends of employees
2. never negotiate with a terrorist, the minute you give in they will keep doing it. over and over
3. Hire people who don't know each other
4. Certain ethnic groups are great workers but their ultimate goal is to take over your stuff. (they are the worst lowballers in life)
5. Never let anyone have access to your clientl list. (Limit who talks to your customers) Dont' allow them to establish relationships
6. have other guys ready to step up.

The fact of the matter is this guy is nothing but a laborer. Most people pay $9 an hour for general labor. $20 an hour you're talking crew leaders or division managers. This guy will never be on that level due to no license
