Starting in Florida

Hi guys. I've read through a bunch of threads and couldn't find a specific answer--what exactly do I need to be legal? I know I need to register with the state and get insurance and all that, but do I need to form an LLC? Just a fictitious name? I'm doing a few jobs and want to start putting out flyers and what not to try and get more, but I need to be legal before I get into trying to market the business. There's not much help on the Sunbiz site...

Contact SCORE. Ask about their mentoring program. There is no cost. This organization is out to help people just starting out and for existing businesses as well.

If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur.

I'm in Saint Augustine, and there's no SCORE near here from what it said on their website.

Nice Try. Your nearest SCORE location is 7825 Baymeadows Way, Jacksonville, FL. 32256. Ph. 904-443-1900. Make the effort. Jacksonville is a short drive from St.Augustine!. Any other reason not to call and schedule an appointment is up to you.

Talk to a CPA. You need to get a Occupational Lic at your local county office. They have the forms to register with State. For me, If I work in City limits, I need a city permit lic also.

Why the sarcasm? "Nice try?" Seriously? I entered my zip into their search and no results came up. Sorry if I'm not the search wizard you are. As far as effort is concerned, I'm busting my butt to try and get my business going, so if you're not going to add any helpful comments, please refrain from commenting at all.

Thanks. What is a typical consultation fee for CPAs? Or will they give you a free consult?

I did some more digging through the SCORE site and now have an appointment next week at their St. Augustine location, which isn't on their main site. Hopefully I can go from fly-by-night grass cutter to legit business owner/operator...

No sarcasm involved. Just typed in the address. And JAX address came up. Score can also provide you with a game plan so you won't have to be busting your butt as hard as you are at present. Hope you give them a call and schedule an appointment. Ask about their mentoring program as well.
