After 35 years in this business nothing surprises me anymore.

After 35 years in this business nothing surprises me anymore.

As I went out to visit clients I visited a Millionaire Private Country Club / Golf Course in New York. Walking into their Shop to take a look at their equipment I immediately began to laugh out loud as there in front of my Face was a Toro Grounds-master 118. Does anyone remember these?? Toro shrunk the 350 /550 models to fit residential services... was a good machine and I had bought a few. After I got every dollar I paid and more out of them I thru them away! out to the curb! They served me well.

Why was I laughing ????

Here sitting at the GC were my 5 Toro's --- this was the major equipment of the maintenance crew. Clear as day some with my company logo still on them. Someone picked them up from my curb, re-welded, glued, duct-taped them and got them to run. I thru them out in 2001... I was speechless....They also had a store room filled with hundreds of parts for these machines that they bought from mower shop that sold them their entire stock of parts for cheap.

God help me....

I can't stop laughing about that reply.

To the op, sounds like you made your money off of them. Did you do a double, or triple take when you saw your old equipment that you know you tossed? Great story!

I definitely got my monies worth out of the machines no doubt!
They had some major repairs that were due like, steering controls, deck welds, pulleys, belts, tires, engine replacements and hydro work.

I tried to sell them very cheap, then for free! No body wanted them....no one liked the steering and Z-rods were coming on the market. So, needed room for my new 580 case in the shop so, off to the curb they went.

By 6 am the next morning they were all gone...all 5!

Tell them you lay claim to them( as they were stolen from your curb ) , and you will sell them for a reasonable price....say, 10 grand each.

Sounds to me the exact opposite approach my local city parks and recreation uses. They buy brand new top of the line front end diesel Grasshoppers and Jacobsen mowers. All brand new. The local school districts use them as well. They buy them new every three years.

I'd have to guess you were lucky someone didn't enforce environmental disposal laws way back, that someone actually picked them up and you weren't reported for it. I'm guessing you live in a rural area of the state, very rural.

Granted this one's against an actual trash hauler who illegally disposed of solid waste:

It nevertheless irritates me to think how some folks simply throw out their unwanteds whereas law abiding citizens have to pay hundreds if not thousands of dollars to have such types of equipment hauled away and disposed of properly.
