I thought for sure this thread was going to be about kawis big blocks. I have a 19hp and a 24hp kawi with no problems yet. One has 300 hours the other 225. They don't use a drop of oil and they start better than my 34hp kohler. They do love the gas!! I'll keep a eye out for these problems.

My Kohlers used to backfire but then a mechanic told me it was due to me turning the machine off at idle. He said you should drop the throttle to 75% only... no lower... and then turn it off. Works like a charm - no more backfire.

These engines also suck in debris through the top cooling fan and all that sticks to the oil causing your engine to overheat.

I'm just the opposite. I like Kawi's and have always had good luck with them. I will do my best to avoid ever having another kohler. My last two both sucked and the very last one drank oil like a wino sucks down ripple, and backfired like PSC described his Kawi doing. Plus, it looked like a mosquito fogger on start up. I used to be a big fan of Kohlers, but not anymore. You fella's can have them.

I feel the same way and seem to be a minority. I like Kawi when it comes time to work on them. Kohler have a learning curve and particulars that don't lend them to even an experienced mechanic. Speaking of experienced mechanics, shops are getting mighty short on them. They have a ton of 8 buck part changers but very few diagnostic specialists.

Ive got 1200 hours on a 16hp Fh480 and the crank has 1/16" play, the starter hammers the flywheel and I think Im having timing problems. Im not real thrilled about the darn thing only lasting 1200 hours.
