Am I Out of Line?

Just got the word yesterday from a guy we sub mowing for that he lost the contract. Since I'm a part timer, the $900/month gross hit is significant. The guy we sub for didn't really have an explanation other than the customer has a buddy with a lawn care business and may have gone that direction. We had not received any negative feedback about our service, so curiosity got the best of me and I contacted the customer directly. I left a message with his secretary, but am not real hopeful about hearing from him. Am I out of line in doing this?

The next time someone complains about your pricing, ask them how much their barber would charge to come over and cut their hair.

You won't since he didn't hire you. It's the "ol' my friend has a mowing business and he was willing to do it for half of what you charge".

Update: My wife just let me know he left his personal cell number and asked for me to call him tomorrow. We'll have to see how it goes, since I really don't have many facts right now.

Yes you're out of line and I would never sub anything to you again. That said, best of luck

You really don't know that he lost the contract (maybe you lost the contract and he does not have the backbone to let you know) that could be the reason that the owner is willing to talk to you.

Yeah, I'd thought about that, but the guy I was subbing for is a very trustworthy person and has never given me a reason to doubt him. We'll see.

Better start advertising, That a hard hit, but you will likely find better work that's direct with the customer.

So if you get it back after talking to him are you going to continue giving your buddy his cut? Or work for the customer directly and tell your friend too bad so sad
