The reasons the motor may turn off soon are as follows:

Faulty thermal cut-out switch.
Low-line-voltage
High ambient temperatures with very heavy load grinding
Overloading the motor (pushing so hard it groans for a long period)

Mid-way during writing this post GRASS BUTLER called me and we discussed the items to check, and then if the line voltage is normal we'll be replacing the motor without question.

We get notified more quickly at our forum than in the general areas, or for the quickest response email or call me. We won't leave any customer unsatisfied and take any problem very seriously.

Thank you,
It was a pleasure talking to this morning. Very informative. I must say I am blown away by the customer service!! I will get back to you this afternoon after I measure the voltage.

I just got a PM from someone experiencing the same problem. I understand this issue is a top priority with Magna Matic and appears to be a problem with a component supplier/vendor of theirs.

I must say their customer service has been top notch since they answered my initial phone call to them at 9:01 am EST on monday morning.

Hello All,

We are working closely with LEESON INDUSTRIAL MOTORS, to solve the problem, it appears about 7-9 MAG-9000 sharpeners made it out our door that have this issue.

LEESON is testing some of our motors at their lab, and it is beginning to appear that they may have used the wrong thermal switch, so the motors cut-out much much earlier than they should.

Without any question Magna-Matic and LEESON will completely take care of the problem including of course all shipping costs to fix LEESON's mistake.

The units are totally safe to use, so you can keep sharpening with them. In the mean time you may remove the rear black body screen, and let a fan blow more air over the motor so you can sharpen longer until we get new motors/sharpeners out with the correct thermal switch.

As always feel free to call me if you have more questions about the thermal issue or its resolution.

I do apologize for problem, but I am glad to say using American made motors from LEESON and BALDOR, they fully stand behind the products and have always solved any issue that occurred in the near 30 years we have used them.

Thank you,

Hello All,

Just an update, we believe we have found the problem. LEESON may have sent us the wrong capacitors for the motors.

I'll make a solid confirmed update after the last bit of testing is done.

Thank you,

Hello All,

It has been confirmed!

LEESON ELECTRIC provided us with the incorrect capacitors. The ones received were 10 microfarad too high, and this caused the motors to heat up faster than they should - this then caused the thermal switch to trip after only 10-15 minutes of use.

LEESON ELECTRIC has shipped us the new capacitors and we should have them on 7/30/13 (Tuesday), we will be sending new capacitors to all owners of the MAG-9000 that have received the wrong capacitors.

While there were only about 8 people who contacted us with thermal shut-down issues, I will be personally calling everyone who has received the wrong capacitors and we'll be sending the correct ones out at no cost, free shipping, and with a full wiring diagram. The 8 or so people with problems were mainly in southern states, which of course the shut-down happened very quickly because of an already high ambient temperature.

If anyone has any further questions about the problem, or its solution feel free to call me or post here.

Thank you all for your kind words and patience while we identified the mistake.
