2014 Moz Local Search Ranking Factors

The annual Moz report is out. Rather than address a bunch of points, I think it would be great if everyone were to digest it, look at your own site and web strategy, and see where the conversation takes us.

One thing I will highlight is the following excerpt:

Proximity to searcher saw one of the biggest moves in this year's survey. Google is getting better at detecting location at a more granular level—even on the desktop. The user is the new Centroid.
We've discussed this on here over the last couple of years and, now more than ever, you should be paying attention to this. When Anayltics presents to you a housing development name, and not the actual town name, that's a bit of a hint to site owners. Attack the parts, not the whole. If you're in, say, Chicago, you're probably not doing yourself any favors by choosing to concentrate on [keyword][Chicago]. Break it up in to bite-sized, dominatable, pieces.

(note: if Headz posts this before I do, I blame Southwest airline's circa 1989 dial-up modem'esque wifi. )

I will post my thoughts as I go through it bit by bit... I am actually trying to get some work done around here!

Interesting thought from the comments about reviews: "Google values what others say about you more than what you say about yourself."

I have a competitor who has been killing in Maps and organic for the last 6+ months. The only thing I can see that separates them from the pack is the focus on reviews. They use Customer Lobby to gather and display reviews.

Anyone else see benefits from one of these review gathering services?

This is a tough one for high-end providers. The guy who pays you $100K+ to landscape his summer home will never leave you a review. He might provide a testimonial, but that just doesn't carry the same SEO value.

I agree with you Tony regarding the break-down of "Cities". Yes searchers search for the bigger cities, but they also search for their direct town. Which "SHOULD" tell business owners/website creators that they should include this context on their web pages and business listings.

Why worry about crap like this when you could be posting your rant for the day in another thread. Much more productive.

Man forget it. I just read the blog and here's my take - the Internet is on its way out. It's peaked and is on the downward slide.
