Engine trouble!

Hey all,
I've got a 32 Toro with a 14 Kaw. I bought it used in February and the guy told me it burned a little oil. Well that turned out to be a lot of oil. Anyways I was planning on doing an overhaul in the winter to find out what is causing the gas and oil to mix but lately it had been getting so hard to start and now it has gotten to the point where it won't start without me usin starter fluid. Basically it won't start cold but when it's warm it starts right up. I've got good compression, good spark plug, clean fuel and air filters, and a clean carb. I'm 15 and me and my dad are trying to troubleshoot this. Any input/advice would be nice. From reading I know the majority of you guys hate Kawasakis. I really want to fix this mower and not buy a new one since I bought for $450 and have made back about 8 times that. We pulled off the carb today and discovered it is clean but we did notice some oil residue in the gas and intake manifold which was expected because it burns a lot of oil. Anyways thanks again and any help is appreciated!
Ryan
