Accepting credit cards

What method do you all use to accept credit card payments from customers? We've always done invoice/recieve checks because we basically service commercial - but lately have been doing more residential jobs where (of course) people want to throw the jobs on credit rather than paying now.

I use square. There are some pros and cons..
I recommend them for the pros of course but wasn't too happy with the cons that we ran into.

Pros
Money is deposited next business day
Software is easy to use on iPad iPhone or android.
You can key in the numbers or swipe

Cons
-Can't process payments over the computer (not too bad)
-You must request and get approved for higher weekly deposit schedules. ( default is like 1000 dollars per 10 day period or something) which is low when doing a 10k landscape job! We did get approved for higher amounts though.

- they only respond over email, so it can be frustrating if you need immediate response!

Credit cards have intrigued me. If my customers are like me they like to pay for as much with a credit card in order to get the rewards!

So how do you mowing/app guys do it? It seems a 3% swipe fee on a $30 lawn would cost too much. I see gas station now selling gas at different prices so I wonder if I could now tell my customers there lawns are $35 by cash/check but would be $36 for credit cards.

What about actually getting payment. Do you require them to store a card number on file? Have them call in to pay...I am an owner operator and don't have a secretary. My crew does a lot of the mowing and I don't need them receiving cards either.

have been looking into this as i am familiar with paypal. Do you ever have any problem getting your money from them? I have heard others have their funds frozen for various reasons.

Only if they suspect fraud. You set up a security check with them and there isn't a problem.

I use a card machine through my bank. It is secure and easy. Customers like having the option for convenience. Some I have their numbers on file and others like to swipe it themselves. Either way I get my money the next business day. The fee for swiping the card is cheaper than the gas to get to the bank to deposit a check. Having the credit card option is definitely good for business. Imo

I think I've decided on square. Seems easy and I have customers that would just want me to key in their numbers. Thanks for the replies

Can using the Square be done even if you are not with the customer? Like if they called you wanting to make a payment?
