half-inch stems on path / spread fixtures?

I have a client with a tudor-style home who wants some path / spread lights to match. Most of the fixtures I see in that decor e.g. shepherd's hook or hanging lanterns all have only half-inch stems. I don't consider them sturdy enough. What do you think?

Depends on material strength and location of fixture. I would have no issues with a brass stem located in a flowerbed. Design with that in mind.
