Scag or Deere

I'm in search of some new equipment and have been shopping, comparing, testing new mowers over the last few weeks...and lurking on LawnSite. I've narrowed it down to either the Scag Tiger Cat 61" or Deere Z920M 60". I've typically leaned toward the Kawasaki engine powered equipment (both get the FX730), but the Tiger Cat currently available here in town has the Kohler (not EFI) 27hp.

Use will be mostly flat terrain, some small hills on 1 to 4 acre lots. I don't currently have demand for a bagger, so that isn't in the plans.

So anybody that has run Deere and Scag, any input? What about reliability and power of the Kohler CV750 engine? What about lack of power complaints with either the FX730 or CV750 on 60" mower decks?

Thanks,

Brad

I have had the chance to see the deck cut quality firsthand from a Deere compared to a scag. I can't remember does that model Deere have the 7 iron? Overall, the 7 iron cut is great. I would recommend the John deere.

The Z920M I am looking at does have the 7 iron pro deck, not the MOD deck.

They are both good machines, and both cut great, but the clippings from the JD will be slightly smaller since the blades are closer to the front baffle. The Scag should have the suspension seat, while it's an upgrade on the JD. The JD has much more room and is a cleaner design, and very easy to work on for maintenance purposes. I say demo them both on your properties and chose whichever suits your tastes the best (as long as you have a great dealer for each to take care of you. If not, go with the better dealer).

I would recommend (or buy myself) a John Deere with a 7 iron over a mod deck for the simple reason that I have heard about too many issues with the mod deck.
