tonage is one of the biggest things youll see and what do you plan on splitting? hard oak or maple or ash, and with that how big will you be getting? obviously you look at how it was bulit frame, tank, motor.

I guess the hardest wood around here is white oak, the most plentiful hardwood is red oak. There are a lot of common beech and hornbeam's. There are no ash tree's. Anything that was split wouldn't be bigger than 24" long. The heavier duty the better, i'm a big fan of over engineered machinery. I don't know what the proper tonnage for something like that would be. Thank's for your response.

I would say at least 27 ton. Since your doing mostly harder wood. I've built our own just horizontal unit with 8hp tonnage no idea but we've never found anything yet we couldnt split.
