Deer Off

Im spending about 250$ on a jug of deer off that creates about 20 gallons of diluted product. I use it on nursery stock every year, buying maybe 8 jugs a year. Any cheaper alternatives? Fences aren't exactly an option as the nursery is about 40 acres.

Have you ever tried Deer Pro I don't know about cheaper but you only have to apply it one a year about oct or November for winter protection.

You do have to be a certified app to buy

Liquid fence will do about 32gallons from 2.5gallons of concentrate which is $259.00

There were a few different companies promoting similar products at the MANTS show last week in Baltimore. I would think the same ones will be at New England Grows in Boston on February 5-7. You could check them out there and ask any of the nurseries there what they use. I have used liquid fence with success, but it is also expensive and they recommend applying it after each rain/snow.

I also must say, I do not have the acreage that you do . I would think your situation might require multiple modes of action. Wouldn't trained dogs help?

The deer shock post might be a help. A fence post baited with an apple and lure scent...when his nose touches two wires next to the apple...12,000 volt shock. Good hang time and they really run. Take their herd with them.

I doubt that it would be possible to protect 40 acres.

You can also get a deer shocking collar. No, you don't have to catch the deer. You put it on your dog to keep him from chasing deer--not what you want.

And ...check out the deer scare sprinkler. It automatically detects the movement like a yardlight--sprinkler starts and runs for a few moments. Scares them away. Shuts off the water after 8 seconds. Needs 9 volt battery. (And hose).

The bird scare cannon--don't know--but they sure are loud.
