16 hp Briggs. Started right up, now won't

16 hp Briggs Vanguard on my leaf loader.

Went to start it last week for the first time since last December. Started right up on the 2nd pull. Let it run for about 5 minutes.

10 minutes later, went to start it up and nothing. Tried pouring a little gas in the carb. Nada. Not sure that I put any Stabil in the tank last fall, probably didn't.

I thought for sure that putting a little gas in the carb directly would get it to start at least.

Any help is appreciated.

Can't help you much without more info. Is it getting spark, fuel? Does it set out in the weather? Have you looked at plugs? Plugs will tell you alot about an engine. Water in the fuel, and the plug will smell like weak gas or even have moisture on the electrode or insulator. Sometimes you will see white smoke (water vapor) coming out the exhaust. Could be a number of things causing it not to start. Need more details.

If it is a fuel problem, one sure way for it to start is spray starting fluid on the air filter or in the carb.

Tried spraying starting fluid in carb, and nothing. Sits on the trailer all season, so it got wet once in a while while trailering. Haven't checked plugs yet. Weird that it initially started right up, then nothing.

Check plug wires to see if they are loose. If not, check for spark by pulling both plugs out of engine, attach one or both plug wires to plugs then grounding plug bodies to the engine or frame and pull like you are starting engine. You can check them one at a time also.

Sounds like no spark for whatever reason. It is odd that it fired up earlier and now is dead.

If no spark, possibly a bad ignition module or on/off (kill switch), or some safety switch is not activated. Being out in the weather could cause probems with on/off switches and ignition modules.

Sounds like you may have water in the fueltank..
When the fuel burned out of the carb...water came in from the fueltank.??

Agree; water in fuel could be the problem. Alcohol in gas probably makes it worse. Drain tank and refill with fresh gas.
Pull wire off spark plug crank it over and see how big the spark is...you need dark conditions...if spark jumps to ground about 3/4 of an inch its good; I would say about 25,000 volts...give or take a few thousand. Do this carefully to avoid an electrical shock. OK? Install new plugs.

You need to determine if you are getting spark first. Like most ppl said

Spark? (Buy a cheap 4 dollar spark tester from harbor freight) TEST TESTER ON YOUR CAR FIRST then see if u have spark (Checking spark during daylight can be tricky even for some skilled mechs)

This is a rare occurrence can be puzzling but DOES HAPPEN! (Sounds like no spark for whatever reason. It is odd that it fired up earlier and now is dead. )

Spark no Check into ign mod or
Spark yes?
Remove spark plugs blow off and turn over engine 5-10 seconds.
reinstall plugs
drain fuel tank
Drain carb float bowl.
Add new fuel
VROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMM Load some leaves!

Be sure to do your standard maintenance OIL air filter ect since that engine is expensive and you want to treat it right
Also please let us know how you fared

Update. Today I go to start it, and it starts right up.

Let it sit for a couple of hours, and nothing. One thing that I left out before. When I went to pull the cord, it would pull out about half way, then lock up. Have to rotate the impeller past where it locks up. It did this to me last fall also. Then ran fine for leaf season.

Once I get it past that point, I can try pull starting it. Thoughts.
