Scag Mower...Good Buy ?

So I have been meaning to look into purchasing a mower that is more suitable to my needs and came across this mower today. I currently have 1.2 acres which is partly wooded with lots and lots of leaves. Since we purchased the house, I have been using my honda 21" push mower to cut the lawn and it has done very well with no problems to report other than it taking a very long time. Anyway the listing for the Scag mower was not very specific other than its a Scag 48" belt driven mower. I am not sure what the model number or serial number is, but based on the pictures posted below, what do all of you experts think...

And I guess also, what do you think would be a fair price for this unit?

Having a link or a price that the person is asking for this unit would be the most helpful, but the biggest advice I think anyone will give you on this site is "DON'T RUSH". This is probably close to one of the first scags that came out. Even 15 years ago Scags had Kawi engines on a 48. Plus it's a Briggs (Not getting into a contest about engines, just stating facts). Unless this person only wants a couple hundred bucks, it's not worth it. We've learned our lesson on that more than a few necessary times.

Below is the link to the listing. The seller wants 800 or best offer.

Hmmm, 800 huh? I'd over him no more than 400. Have you contacted him at all yet? How many hours, has anything ever been replaced on it? Big deal if he's asking 800 for such an old mower.

Looks fairly clean for an older walk behind. Tough to give a price without seeing it first hand and testing. Check it out, if all looks good, start low to see how much they are willing to deal. This time of the year, not a whole lot of buyers so the advantage is yours if you want it.

The person selling it is selling the mower for a friend in the hospital. That is all I really know and am waiting to hear back regarding the model number and serial number. I believe it starts but haven't gone to look at it yet.

What should I look for ? What kind of compression should these engines get approximately ? I worked as a car mechanic for a few years so I am mechanically inclined but grew up in the city so I have not much of a background in anything but standard push mowers.

I would say do a google search for B/S 12.5 HP motor compression. Especially try to find out the year of the engine. I had a 14 horse on a 44 and it was underpowered. I understand situations come up that money is needed for a serious situation but don't let that cloud your judgement. Any money they get will help them in their situation. Yes, it does look clean but it's still old. So find out:

Hours on the machine, this is something that even his friend or family of the friend can tell you or find out.
Age of the machine.
Anything being replaced

Checking the air filter, oil on dip stick, under side of deck, belts, dry rotted tires, etc... will give you an idea if its been taken care of. If it doesn't run to test it out, I would pass on it unless you get it real cheap.

I went by my scag dealer this morning and they were saying that may be a replacement engine, which I guess could be good or bad. Does anyone know what years Scag used that engine as original equiptment, if at all?
