Hey Armsten:

Thanks for the response, yes you are ahead of the curve with a long term plan. A good idea is to start putting together some job descriptions, an organizational chart, maybe I can post an example organizational chart here if you think it will help and I can figure out how!

Your pole left out " lack of desire"
Some of us are older dudes who are content with where we are in business.

Hi Al Inc:
Good point. I struggle with the whole growth issue all the time and think about all of the pros and cons of growing my business. There is nothing wrong with being content with where you are in business, I'm kind of an older dude as well so I can relate to that. For a long time I always believed that bigger was better but recently I have been questioning that philosophy. On the one hand when you grow your business you give opportunity to the people who work for you to move up within the company and grow with the company. This personal growth is what attracts and keeps good people. Also growing is exciting (at least it is to me) and it stimulates the culture and work environment, it also gives an optimistic sense of security for our employees. On the other hand the bigger you get the more issues you have with things like quality control and knowing what is happening within your company on a day to day basis. If not managed correctly growth can lead to over extending yourself on credit and loans to buy equipment needed to keep up with the new demands. I think it all comes down to the personal preference of the owner and over time those preferences change. My personal philosophy is that I still believe in growth and growing my business but not only for growth's sake. I believe that growing simply to grow is flawed. There has to be a higher purpose, whether it's to help your employees grow as people or to build a company you will be proud of in an ethical, honest and sustainable way. Whatever resonates with you and works is what matters in business. What does everyone else think?

I think it was the recession that changed my opinion on growth. I had downsized just before it hit and wasn't really affected by it much.

That's a tough question. I thought last yr was going to be great . Spring was awesome , saw new housing starts everywhere. Then come fall when I should have seen foundations going in a lot I barely saw a forms truck even driving down the road.
