New Equipment Item for fall 2013.

Well, I've been using my poulan pro 33cc trimmer with a hedge trimmer blade, and finally decided I needed a dedicated gas hedge trimmer. The poulan pro has earned its keep, but wanted a quality piece of equipment for the job.

Enter the Stihl HS81t. It wasn't cheap, but in using it over the last week on boxwoods and a few other hedges, it cuts like butter. The T model has the faster blade speed, and for finish work, this hedge trimmer does very well. It has the pivoting handle, but im still undecided if that's a plus or not. Time will tell, I can see how it makes for better ergonomics, but at the same time, I have to wonder if handle strength will suffer.

I bought the same trimmer this year, I use it for detail work on boxwoods and other fine shrubs. I would suggest getting a HS45 for general/rough trimming, that way your HS81t stays nice and sharp. I personally have noticed a big difference between the two, the HS81t is balanced very well, has little vibration, swivel handle, much bigger feul tank, finer cut, exhaust stream is wider and more forward, etc. However it can't go through some of the stuff I throw at my HS45, it has more power, the blade is the same length (the newer ones are shorter for some resaon)and had served me well, I have cut through stuff like 1" thick before. All this being said, if I were to only have one it would be the HS45, but for fine detail it doesn't cut the mustard, for carve and charge it can't be beat, just my opinion.

yeah, I took a close look at that one and the 56 too. Because most of the hedges im doing are trim work, I went with the 81.

Ill keep what you said in mind though if I find myself working an overgrown hedge line. So far the 81 has worked great on the boxwoods and yaupons.
