Never seen that particular item. Some funky old plumbing there. Look for a sweat fitting that has a hole in the side (intended for feeding in solder)

My guess is a pressure reducer possibly as old as boots.

the hex shape near the top, and what looks like a cut-away beneath it, are a definite pointer at an air admittance valve - question is, why put one there
