I have a c5500 4x4 with 8.1 and get 5mpg loaded or empty. My 3500 and 4500 both duramax get around 10 mpg. Lots of trouble with wiring on both 4500 and 5500.

@dgregory Do you think it being a 4500 and 2wd there would be much difference? I was hoping better than that, but I am not surprised.

The 4500 is 2wd and has duramax. The best fuel mileage out of it is 12 miles per gal on interstate and empty.

Sorry I misread your question. I had a 2004 2500 4x4 with 8.1 and it still only got around 6-7 miles per gallon. It all depends on gear ratio, but I would not expect much more than 6 mpg. The lack of mpg would not bother me that much with the cost of diesel vs gas. When I last did the numbers I have to drive my diesels over 100,000 miles to break even. With all my gas trucks I start looking for a gas station at about 150 miles, and with the diesels I start looking at 250 miles.

As somebody else said i have a 5500 with the 8.1, its ha a 10' dump bed on it and it gets about 6mpg. Its been a great truck, only issues ive had is with the rear fuel tank. We mainly use it for lighter loads like mulch, and fall cleanup. In the summer the hardscape crew uses it as an extra truck. It cant haul much weight but it tows really well for a small truck. Its definitely way more capable than a 3500.

I LOVE my 2004 quad cab diesel 2 wd, Air ride seats and suspension, Pick up bed 22.5 rim/tires

Not really like yours but,

Not a single issue. (Except for dash cluster when a jerk stole my radio and trashed it in the process)
Under cdl
Huge brakes and stopping power
Huge cab
Tall ride height and great visibility
Great business recognition

The Allison is bullet proof
8.1 should be more than strong enough

Body/platform compares to a ford 650. Gm goes to the bigger platform, where ford uses the same up to 550

Get ready to spend more on tires brakes etc, go to a place called diesel place dot com and see if the have a thread for the 8.1

I look at fuel as a business expense and right it off

I own a C5500 with the 5-speed auto. Has the 8.1 motor. Currently I average 6.5mpg. This is with a 14' flatbed dumb weighing in at 12,300lbs with two employees, two full tool boxes, near full tank, and side-gates on. Overall a good truck. You can expect the engine to last to 200,000 miles based on what I have read and my experience confirms that at 215,000.
I like it so much that after looking at the f550 and terra-star Im not impressed enough to spend $55-75,000 with what I see.
I believe the c4500 shares many parts with the c5500

I have actually found another truck similar to the one that was posted. It's a 8.1 with 30k but instead of the Allison it is a 6speed standard. Now I was looking mostly for a auto but I will be the only one driving this truck unless future employee can be trusted because this will be my landscape/hardscape truck. Truck is extremely clean and drives amazing. Could pick it up this week for 18k he was originally asking 20,000. Thanks everyone who has replied already.

Also reason other truck fell threw truck had bad carfax report with a prior accident and he wouldn't move on the price.
