I think what some are missing, when comparing an EcoBoost to the 5.0L, is the power curve. With the V-8, you have to rev it harder to access that torque because the peak is so high in the power band. With natural aspiration, to create a big HP number requires big RPM. When doing that, the peak torque number is moved up the RPM range, as well. The EcoBoost makes a lot more low-end torque. They can manipulate a variety of parameters to get it into boost very early, which is why it feels and pulls so strong.

As for a 2.7L, I'll have to pass. You still need some cubic inches to get things rolling, before getting into boost. The aforementioned 4-cylinders make no low-end power. They have considerable lag-time, before they get into boost, which is why drag racers use a variety of "tools" to launch them and keep RPM in the stratosphere. If they lose RPM, they lose boost, and, then, lose power.

As for the truck, I like it. It seems like they've done some fairly drastic things with it, unlike, some other manufacturer's "all-new" designs.

I wonder what kind of markup Ford is going to want for these things vs the traditional 'steelies'.

Mt guess is a lot. Not to mention they all keep making stuff bigger and heavier increasing fuel usage

Oh geez! When is it going to stop? Every design it's "Gained and inch here. Gained an inch there. Gained a few more pounds.". The Dodge Dakota was about perfect, for the average truck owner. But, egos demand a "Big Boy" truck.

The 2.7 will not have that much power as the current ecoboost is only 365. There is no numbers in it's rating currently but going by the current model I would say it will be close to 300, but I'm guessing.
THE FRAME IS NOT ALUMINUM!!!!!!!!!! IT'S A STEEL FRAME STILL....
The block is not aluminum it consist in being the same material as the current 6.7 block and the same material used in NASCAR engines so should be able to withstand the little bit of power. Factory toyotas made over 111hp per liter back in the early 90's that are very reliable and usually pushed will into the 1000hp ratings on daily basis.
Honda produced engines without any form of power adder from the factory at 118hp per liter in a engine designed in the late 90's.
The reason new engine produce more power is the way the fuel is delivered. Rather than being draw into the cylinder its directly injected in to the cylinder. Now they're working on trying to fire two shots of fuel during the same compression stroke to get two bangs thus creating even more power.

Look I'm not trying to bash you it's just important that people don't get twisted into thinking the frame is Aluminum like a can.

If you can afford it, spend the extra and get the diesel. Better fuel mileage and will last so much longer and it comes with 800 ft. pounds of torque. I average 16-17 mpg and have gotten as much as 22 on the hwy. with a tail wind. I would never go back to a gas burner. Diesel may cost more but you'll spend less over time.

Diesel is more expensive. Higher oil changes. Higher repair bills.

Marginally better fuel mileage only when pulling 10k+

Not to mention the 10k preuim for diesel.

The weight savings will be tremendous over the life of the truck. Every stop, turn, and go will be cheaper in it. I don't see how GM and Ram can compete unless they also go aluminum as well. I can't wait to see real world performance on them.
