Finding good help

Am I the only one that has a hard time finding good help?

Guys talk a good game and ain't worth a crap. Or the real good guys want a large amount of money.. I am not looking for somebody to run my show for me, just a good laborer.

I've started doing as much as I can by myself lately until I can get some decent help. Now I know how yellow dog feels.

Some guy stopped by the shop last week and said he gets all his laborers from March to December through an agency that specializes in bringing in Hispanic Immigrants...pays something like $1800 to Homeland Security to get approved, then another $6k to the agency in VA. Hasn't hired local help for 5 years or so and hasn't had any equipment stolen, his house broken into, slackers on the job/taking sick leave, etc. Said they work 6 days a week if you want them to.

I'd love to find a good Hispanic. I used to know a couple but after a bad car wreck they went back home.. And I am not real sure where to go find a guy.

I just got a good guy by asking other contractors. I was working on a job and asked the GCs laborer if he knew anyone looking for work. Turns out his cousin is a skilled bricklayer.

Skip the Mexicans if you go that way and find a Guatemalan. Better workers and much cleaner.

Funny you mentioned my name. I saw the thread and was going to jump in and give my .02 cents and whine a little.

You are NOT the only one! With so many people out of work, you would think that there would be someone who wants an honest day's work ABOVE minimum wage.
I hire a saw guy who pays $100/day plus food and transportation for general labor and they maybe put in 6.5-7 hours of work. Whether they are raking, dragging brush, or standing there, they get an easy $100. if we work extra long days, they get more, etc., and it's still hard to find guys and we don't work them that hard!

That's quite a bit of a generalization, isn't it but I have to admit the Guatemalans I have met work their arses off and get their green cards updated so they can work.
