What type of mower for my 1/4 acre yard?

I have around 1/4 acre of grass in my yard and I am trying to decide what mower I need. I like the $1k mark and so that limits my options to the Toro TimeMaster or a basic 42" rider. Which would be better for me?

For under $1000, the Timemaster would give you the best cut.

The next time someone complains about your pricing, ask them how much their barber would charge to come over and cut their hair.

More information would be useful for a meaningful response. What kind of grass? Terrain -- flat, steep slopes? Need to bag? Mulch? Discharge? Qualify of turf -- scrappy, thin, or heavy, dense, heavy Spring growth? How often to mow?

Since you are a homeowner, time may be critical, or not? Are you looking for a quick pass, mow and park, be done, or meticulous, wanting to spend lots of time on keeping the yard perfect (e.g. hobby)?
