Annika Sorenstam and the Old Tom Morris Award

The Old Tom Morris Award is presented to an individual who, through a continuing lifetime commitment to the game of golf, has helped to mold the welfare of the game in a manner and style exemplified by Old Tom Morris, according to the GCSAA.

Annika Sorenstam won the award last month at the Golf Industry Show.

I'm not doubting Annika Sorenstam's commitment to the game, but do you think a golf course superintendent should receive this award -- or at least someone who is more involved with golf course management?

I'm leaning towards your suggestion/recommendation Larry and feel that the Supers need/should get a little more love when it comes to an award like this. not saying Annika Sorenstam isn't deserving of it, but why not give it to someone a little more "involved" with the course management side of it

great topic Larry

Didn't GCSAA decide that the award needed to go to someone more recognizable to the public at large? Since the award has been given to folks outside of golf management circles, it has brought a flurry of articles, speaking engagements, and other publicity to GCSAA and to the role of the golf course superintendent that otherwise wouldn't have happened.

Maybe the Old Tom award can be kept in the family, but something is needed to help those outside the family understand what we do and that we're not uneducated amateurs. It's amazing (and sad) how many times I hear (at both private clubs and daily fee courses) golfers talking to golf pros about adjusting things like HOC, mowing lines, grounds crew start times, etc.

To our customers, the letters PGA and USGA mean more than GCSAA. But, when they see the recent Old Tom winners endorse GCSAA, they begin to see its value.
