Top handle or rear handle chainsaw?

Gentleman, I am curious what you use most often... a top handle chainsaw, or a rear handle chainsaw?

Why?

Use them both, of course Ive been in the tree work field, longer than Ive even been in landscaping.

They have different applications.

Your top handle is lighter duty use.
More agile for pruning and limbing.

IF your climbing in a seat of belay, or in a bucket, you can start it by holding with one hand and pulling with the other.

Generally you can use them one handed if need be.

I think of them like a pistol.

Rear handle chainsaws and usually bigger, are started from a ground position, and have a place to stick your toe, this is because with the bigger engine it frequently requires more balls to yank and start.

The rear handle position affords better balance and control as well as leverage for cutting trunks, bigger limbs, bucking logs and felling trees. They generally support a much larger bar.

most landscapers are best served with a top handle saw with no more than an 18" bar and can go as small as a 12-14 bar.

But most as "manly men" and buy a bigger chainsaw than they need.

Some Landscapers actually do tree work too tho, especially when clearing, or storm season, if you are in the areas where you get hurricanes or tornadoes.

I prefer Stihl for rear handle saws and echo for top handles…. because If i drop an echo from a tree, it's not big deal…. it's like a bic pen….you just shout "another!" like thor…and they run a new saw up the rope to you.
