kawasaki FC420V question

I just bougt a 36" Exmark Viking knowing it needed work. Backfired when tried to start it with starting fluid, as well as compression seemed to not release. So I figured maybe valves just needed adjusted. i removed the cover and discovered there was a broken push rod. I haven t had time yet to look any further. just wanted opinions on what is the possible cause of this. Just stress crack and break, or maybe a valve stuck?

My guess would be stuck valve, Check/clean both before installing another push-rod.....

Neither valve was stuck, it seems the valve guide slipped. What holds them in place? they are just pressed in. So im assuming once a valve guide slips the head is garbage. Seems like there should be something from holding them from slipping.

Anyone know if a 16hp Briggs Vanguard would mount up in the same holes on the engine deck?
