Recent increase in blown fuses

About 2 years ago, I installed about 20 G12 70 light strands (standard plug) in the outdoor patio of a local restaurant. No problems until recently. Strand fuses (3 amp) are blowing resulting in a service call and upset clients.

What could cause the recent issues with fuses? Realistically, how long can I expect the stands to function in an outdoor environment?

This place is dead. I thought at least one of the regulars would chime in by now.

My best guess, is you have a bad strand in there somewhere. A wire is exposed or shorting out or some such thing. That is causing the fuse to blow.

To answer your second question... it depends on the quality of the strands. If you put cheap strands without sealed sockets or lighter wire, they won't last as long (not saying you did this). But, you also have a second bigger problem, and that's you have lights that are installed all year long. So you have a much higher risk of all sorts of things causing you problems. Birds, squirrels, teenagers, general man-handling, wind, sun, snow,.....etc.

Lights are typically rated in 90 day seasonal use. So, in your case, two years is like 8 years of seasonal use.

I guess Christmas light folks don't check in as often in the off season. It has been awhile since I have checked in. but yes, Hot Rod is right, regular and even commercial LED mini's we replace on permanent installs every other year or so. The sun just wears out the plastic covering on the wore and allows the rain or irrigation to short out the strands.
