Retaining Wall Collapses

The news report (on TV) did not say what typr of R-Wall this is. Not sure if its a SRW, or a masonry wall. I'm guessing it's a SRW.

I always say "if the wall fails, the liability can be more than just rebuilding the wall......."

yep, it's a 30' high SRW.

This is what I've been talking about in terms of failures. Wall fails and now there are houses there, so the rebuild ain't gonna be easy. These walls should never be under estimated.

Maybe you know this area but at the 1:41 mark it looks like there was not sufficient enough area behind the wall for just grid? ( The wall appears to be close to the townhomes )

They build the walls before the town homes usually in our area.

It's becoming really common to have a HUGE srw wall.

Wasn't there another one off of 495 or something that failed recently?

I agree. The wall appears awfully close to the structure. Think about All that roof water collecting behind the wall.

general rule of thumb is the grid should be 80% of the wall height

Well that is nasty. I don't think this would be news if an appropriate sized srw block would of been used. The set back (or lack of) looks to be an issue as well.

They'll be thinking of this blowout on the city's next retaining wall project.
