It's a good way to over fill the oil. This isn't good advice, how do you know you got exactly all of the old oil out?

...like I said... Always go by the dipstick...I did this everyday for 10 years. I think I know what I'm talking about..

That is strange...
My car takes 5 quarts of oil...
The dipstick only shows when there's more than 3 quarts left in it.
When there's 4 quarts of oil in the engine of my car, the dipstick reads 'add.'
And when there's 3 quarts or less left, the dipstick shows nothing.
So no offense to you, but reading my car's dipstick won't tell you anything once the oil level falls below 3.1 quarts.
There could be 1 or 2 or even 3 quarts of dirty oil left in the engine, the dipstick wouldn't tell you a thing.
I know my truck's the same way.

So I just always assumed all the rest of my engines operate under similar principles.

Really herler? We're talking about filling oil. Common sense here.

Until you show the customer the TSB from the manufacturer that states to follow the book, not the stick. Always follow the book. NOT the stick. And were talking a full change. Drain the oil all the way then add what the book says. A full fill with filter is x.x qts. Oils doesn't hide in an engine unless you are changing oil on a wicked slope.

Do a Google search for "oils dipstick is wrong" and see how common it really is....

You do what you want. But there is not one person in the industry that is going to follow the book over the stick. There's a dipstick for a reason.

I can assure you the opposite. Having been in dealers from german autos, gm, marine, heavy diesel, and off highway equipment the book is where you get capacities. Not the stick. Hence the TSB from the manufacturers. The TSBs even state, disregard the stick and fill with x amount of oil. I have seen hondas that showed full at 2 qts. Engine required 3.75qts. The TSBs even stated following the stick would cause engine damage/failure.

I'm telling you it's not negotiable. You're customer only cares about what the dipstick says. They don't give a damn about a tsb.

They'll be obsolete soon anyway. BMW has already done away with them on several cars
