Advice for seeding 12k sq ft buffalo new lawn

Needing to plant 12,000 square feet of buffalo in the next week or two. Need advice on the best way to go about it for best results. The plot was wheat that i have been mowing off since spring and running a landscape rake on my tractor over every couple of weeks to level and kill off new weeds. Its pretty much bare dirt now with a few weeds. I plan to round up it in the next couple days to kill off what weeds have managed to survive to this point and then plant a few days after. I have enough seed for 3 pounds per 1000 sq ft. I do not have a drill or access to one. I am thinking a drop spreader to apply the seed and then make a couple passes over it with a slicer. Do i need to plant an annual rye or something over it to give it some cover as well? Any advice given would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I am in western kansas and its going to be planted in a small orchard. I want to use buffalo grass as its very drought resistant and i dont want to have to water it except occasionally after the first year. Here are a few pics of the area to be planted. These are after the wheat has been mowed off several times but prior to being levelled out with the landscape rake.

Keep us updated! Not many buffalo lawns here at Hutch but that's the route I plan to go in the future when I can move out on the farm in a few years. I would imagine a cover crop of annual rye might be helpful but I could be wrong as I have no experience with it.

I don't think you need a cover crop unless you are trying to protect a young plant from winter weather.
