Where did you start?

We all have started somewhere. Maybe crap equipment but we got the job done. I started 3 years ago, used electric blower and trimmer, threw my mower in the trunk or my grandmas Mercury(yes a car trunk)(and yes best grandma ever). Would be cool to know how everyone else got started. If you have pictures of your first year and now show them!

I started out with just using my dad's Craftsman walk behind mower and an edger and battery blower.

I spent 18 months looking for good deals on equiptment. So I started out pretty good.

I will say Ive cut 5 acres with a 36" mower.

I think if you stay out of Debt and make what you have work you wil have a far better chance of success.

I lined up some work as a sub for a few guys I knew. I got a LOAN for a newer larger truck, got a LOAN for a new trailer, got a LOAN for the larger pieces of equipment. The smaller stuff I put on a CREDIT CARD. Then I grew from there, taking out loans as needed to finance the growth. All in all, for my company it worked.

When my parents got divorced, at the age of 5, I started to mow our lawn. I used a Lawn Boy walk behind for years. I then added my Grandpas yard and a couple others in the neighborhood. 4 years ago I bought a 5x8 tractor supply trailer and did lawns with a 42" Toro residential Z, John Deere trimmer, and a craftsman hand held blower. I now have a 6.5x10 open trailer with Xtreme Racks, Echo stick edger, Echo trimmer, Echo 770 backpack blower,2014 Scag Tiger Cat, 2014 Scag 36" WB, and a 2005 F150 to pull it all around! I'm solo so I think I'm pretty set for a long while!!

I have only been doing this for approx. 3 years and I do it as a second job. I started with my personal 2010 Craftsman YTS3000 46" cut (essentially a Husqvarna), a Troybuilt weedeater and a Walmart 22" push mower loaded into back of a pickup. Loading that YTS3000 into that truck was fun to say the least bit it worked. Today I'm not big by a long shot but I have continually grown in size and knowledge. Along the way i have learned you get what you pay for and you dont always have to buy the most expensive to get by. Stay out of walmart, Lowes and Home Depot. You may get it cheaper but for that extra $10-$20 you pay for that weedeater at a dealer you will get better service and establish a relationship that will benefit both of you in the future. Build your business one satisfied customer at a time and those customers will talk and business will grow. Craigslist is also cheap to use. Dont over commit yourself. I believe the biggest keys to success are satisfied loyal customers, a network of reliable dealers with a primary one you deal with, patience and commitment and knowledge.
